Despite the monthly increase, machine tool orders were still 9 percent below levels for December 2019. For the year, orders slid to $4.5 billion for 2019, down 17 percent compared with 2018. The figures are based on information from companies participating in AMT’s U.S. Manufacturing Technology Orders (USMTO) program.

Machine tool orders totaled $337.2 million in February 2019 accounting for a 15 percent decline from January and a seven percent decline from the previous February, according to the latest USMTO report from AMT. The year-to-date total was $735.2 million, less than one percent off the year-to-date total at this point last year. The latest U.S. Manufacturing Technology Orders (USMTO) report also shows a year-over-year increase of more than 10 percent, the fifth consecutive month posting a year-over-year gain. The U.S. manufacturing technology market has been weak since oil prices began to drop dramatically in June 2014. AMT reported new orders in the Northeast region for metal-cutting equipment increased 20.6% from July, and 17.5% from August 2018, to $85.56 million.
