Jan van Eyck has gone down in history as the alchemist who discovered the secret of oil painting. But, says Jonathan Jones, the real story is more complicated. Oil painting is an ancient technique that can be traced back to the earliest civilizations. This technique has continuously been redeveloped over the centuries into present day oil painting. Oil painting is heralded as one of the most beautiful and respected art forms of all time. Historians place the origins of oil painting just before Leif Ericson reached the shores of North America and the dawn of the Middle Ages in Europe. It appears to have been in continuous use for some 1100 years. Modern oil paint mediums have come a long way since the time of Joseph Mallord William Turner, or J.M.W. Turner, (1775 – 1851) and Joshua Reynolds (1723 – 1792). Both of these painters, along with many others, used a medium, mixed with their oil paints, known then variously as Gumtion, McGuilpis, Macgilp and Megilp. Oil paints may have been used as far back as the 13th century. However as a medium in its modern form, Belgian painter, Jan van Eyck, developed it during the 15th century. Because artists were troubled by the excessive amount of drying time, van Eyck found a method that allowed painters an easier method of developing their compositions. Oil provided a versatile medium in which the artist was allowed the freedom to change the composition of his painting. Because the colour saturation of the paint was enhanced by the use of oil, no other medium could reproduce its range of both transparency and opacity.
